Melfort Gymnastics Club donates to Melfort Spruce Haven Spray Park

The City of Melfort received a sizeable donation on Wednesday, Sept. 18 from the Melfort Gymnastics Club to go towards the Spruce Haven Park project.

If you’re thinking “I haven’t heard from the Melfort Gymnastics Club for years”, you’re not going crazy, or have stepped into a time machine. The Melfort Gymnastics Club has been folded since about 2010, but the club had some money in their reserves and they wanted to wait to donate the funds according to Past-President Kim Burgis.

“We were just waiting for something to be worthwhile for the whole community to enjoy of the age group that we participated with our kids in the gymnastics club,” Burgis said. “But now they may be their kids enjoying it, or their grandkids.”

The donation was a total of $11,094.27 from the club. Burgis said the funds came from their reserves of previous years, as well as selling their equipment.

With Spruce Haven continuing to grow, the donation will go towards the Spray Park that opened this summer. Burgis gave praise to the whole project, not just the spray park.

“Just to see the expansion and the planning that’s gone into every stage and phase has been really well thought out,” she said. “We love the brightness of it and the openness of it and the colour, it really draws you to the location for sure. It’ll be nice to see when everything is finished with the parking, and the trees. It’s very very worthwhile for the community to have something like this, for all ages really.”

At its peak, the Melfort Gymnastics Club had 56 participants between the ages of three and 12. But, coaching and gym time became harder and harder to find, leading to the selling of the equipment and then the ultimate folding of the organization.
