Spruce Haven Park in Melfort looks a lot greener after Tree Plant Day on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

With help from Tree Canada, Home Hardware, and the City of Melfort, 135 trees and shrubs were planted in the new area of Melfort.

“The objective is to enhance the communities by greening them or help beautify them,” Kelvin Kelly with Tree Canada said. “And then to get community participation involved.”

Tree Canada has planted a total of 82 million trees across the country and have been in a partnership with Home Hardware since 1992. This year, 30 communities are getting trees to plant from Tree Canada and Home Hardware. Three of those communities are in Saskatchewan, including Melfort. This year, Home Hardware got a grant for just over 60 trees and shrubs, but that was subsequently matched by the City of Melfort to total 135.

At the Tree Plant Day on Wednesday, volunteers came from all over the city. A Grade 6 class from Brunswick School was there to help as well as Communities in Bloom, Plus Industries, and even the Melfort Mustangs.

“I mean to have the hockey team to mentor these young students in taking stewardship towards planting trees is very appreciative,” Kelly told northeastNOW.

Spruce Haven Park in Melfort grew drastically over the past year or so. It all started with the skate park opening, then the soccer pitches, the playground, and spray park as well. There is much more to come at the park as well and Jeff Klan, Manager at Home Hardware in Melfort said it’s great to help pitch in.

“I think anytime we can green our community, it’s important,” Klan said. “This is a growing area that has had a lot of development over the years, so adding green in these empty spots is really nice.”

National Tree Plant Day is Wednesday, Sept. 25, but Klan said they chose yesterday due to some scheduling.
