Eighty new trees planted in Humboldt

Branching out.

Humboldt Home Hardware and the City of Humboldt, in conjunction with Tree Canada and the Westminster Scouts in Humboldt, have planted 80 large trees in the city.

General Manager of Humboldt Home Hardware Dean Possberg said they were excited to participate in the project.

“Home Hardware has had a long-standing relationship with Tree Canada,” said Possberg. “Home Hardware has planted some 27,000 trees [across Canada] at a cost of $1.5 million in greenspaces from coast-to-coast.”

The trees were planted along Fifth Ave., between 17th St. and Peck Rd. going past the high school and the Uniplex.

“There was a continuation of a walking path along 5th Ave., which currently has trees beside it, so this was a continuation of that path,” said Possberg. “The railway yard is right there as well, so this is going to create a bit of a buffer zone between the high school, the Uniplex, and the rail yard, and it connects that walking path and extends it out to Peck Road.”

Possberg said the community has been extremely supportive of the initiative, and when the grant from the Home Hardware corporate office didn’t quite cover the cost of the entire project, the City of Humboldt chipped in with funding to complete the project.

“The community is 100 per cent behind this, and I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback from members of our community on just how nice the treeline looks already with the new trees that have been planted,” said Possberg.

This is the third time Humboldt Home Hardware has planted trees in the community, in partnership with the city, Tree Canada, and the Scouts.

Fruit-bearing trees were planted along the water tower, and in 2015 a plant took place in the spray park area in Water Ridge Park.

The planting coincided with the ninth annual National Tree Day Sept. 24.
