Broncos Defeat Mustangs

Mustangs fall in overtime for second straight game

Oct 5, 2019 | 8:53 AM

For the second straight game, the Melfort Mustangs had a tough second period, and have fallen in overtime.

On Friday, Oct. 4 in Melfort, it was a 5-4 loss to the Humboldt Broncos in the extra frame.

The first period started well for the Mustangs as it was back and forth action to begin the contest. Melfort capitalized on it as Christian Albertson bursted by a few Broncos on the left wing and cut to the net and the puck managed to squeak through the pads of Brendan Forman to give the home team the 1-0 lead after the opening frame.

Then just like it did on Tuesday against the La Ronge Ice Wolves, the second period bit the Mustangs hard. Isaac Leik scored three minutes in to tie things up and the Broncos started to dominate. Graysen Cameron scored at the 12:16 mark, followed by Bryson Cecconi at the 15:49 mark to all of a sudden give Humboldt a 3-1 lead. Melfort got a goal from Zach Anderson with about three minutes to play in the period to somewhat stop the bleeding and make it 3-2 after two. Humboldt outshot the Mustangs 24-5 in the period.

The Mustangs seemed to wake back up a bit in the third period as Tyson Meyers notched his first goal of the year just two minutes in to make it 3-3 on a great pass to spring him on a breakaway. However, the Broncos pushed back and got a goal from Max Gudnason six minutes later to restore the lead. With about six-and-a-half minutes to play, Meyers banged away at a puck in front of the net that finally went in to make it 4-4, forcing overtime. Mustangs Assistant Coach Trevor Logan said Meyers play in the third showed a lot of leadership.

“That’s what we need, is those guys, guys like Tyson to go out and do that,” Logan said. “And he showed that he can in the third period there and we just need to see that for 60 [minutes] and I think we can compete with any team in the league.”

In overtime, Melfort controlled most of the play but a bouncing puck found it’s way to Karter McNarland in the Mustangs zone and the 2003-born-forward ripped a shot by Tanner Martin to get his first SJHL goal and the 5-4 win for Humboldt.

Logan said the positive they can take from the game is how they battled back in the third period.

“On the bench, everybody was positive and everybody was pushing everybody to go,” he said. “And that’s what it takes. In the second we just got flat and everybody was a little bit down and kind of pouting and you can’t do that, you just got to man up and keep going.”

Melfort falls to 6-2-2-0 on the season while Humboldt improves to 5-2-0-1. The rivals meet again on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Humboldt.
