NESPCA holds open house, gets rave reviews

The North East SPCA (NESPCA) held an open house on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Melfort at the newly opened Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter.

The open house gave the NESPCA a chance to show people in the region around the shelter. Kristy Mason is the shelter manager, and said the reactions she got were great.

“I don’t think people expected it to be quite this much,” she said. “It’s a really beautiful building and I think people are really seeing that and are blown away by it.”

Lorana McComber was seeing the inside of the shelter for the first time and was very pleased with what she saw.

“It’s amazing,” McComber told northeastNOW. “Way better than I ever thought it was going to be, and it’s finally come true.”

She added that having something like this in the northeast is very important.

“There hasn’t been anything like this for years,” McComber said. “And you see on Facebook all the cats and dogs at vet clinics waiting to be adopted. This is much friendlier for them.”

McComber gave plenty of credit to the board who worked tirelessly to get everything put together and have it up and running.

The Open House had a barbecue sponsored by Cindy’s Independent Grocer and people in attendance were given tours of the brand new facility.

Mason said seeing everyone come into the facility is great so that people now see something tangible. She added that they are looking for volunteers as well, which is another reason for the open house. They’re also looking for donations to help keep the shelter running and to complete a few smaller projects.

The shelter also received their first animals on Saturday with four cats coming in from the north. Mason said they hope to have the rest of their animals coming in the next couple of weeks as they are still waiting on a few more kennels.
