Melfort council enacts bylaw to acquire land for hospital expansion

It was a rare occurence at the City of Melfort’s regular council meeting on Monday, October 7 when the expropriation bylaw was enacted.

The purpose of the bylaw is for the city to acquire two lots on the southeast corner of the Melfort Hospital land. The lots are neither owned by the hospital nor the city.

“The expropriation process offers the city a process to move forward when negotiations seem to have stalled or are making no progress,” Mayor Rick Lang said.

The lots are separated by a city-owned lot on Stovel Ave. W. and are at the addresses of 302 and 308 Stovel Ave. W.

The city has said they would need those lots for expansion, but Lang wouldn’t officially say if it was for the heliport that has been in the works.

“It’s for potential expansion at the hospital,” he said.

The next step in the expropriation process will be up to a provincial body according to Lang. A price will be decided and both parties will be notified of that price.

“It’s that simple,” Lang said. “Then the final decision will come and we will be the new owners of that property.”

There is no word yet on when the City of Melfort will officially own those lots.
