Official Community Plan

City of Melfort approves new official community plan and zoning bylaw

Oct 9, 2019 | 2:00 PM

The City of Melfort has a new official community plan.

Planning started about 19 months ago as the city put together a steering committee to start. That was followed by consultation and research with Crosby and Hanna Associates. There was also some public imput with open houses, a public forum, and a special council meeting. City Manager Ryan Danberg said the plan sets out a framework for the future of Melfort for the next 20 years.

“It’s quite an extensive plan that we will use to reference as an administration and council, to guide us through our future decisions,” Danberg said. “As it relates to any issues to deal with residential, commercial and any development of any kind.”

He said the time and effort it took to get the community plan together will be well worth it for the city and the citizens of Melfort.

Danberg said with the plan being so in depth and extensive, there isn’t anything specific that should be highlighted. He said the plan talks about future land use relating to future developments, possible future developments, sensitive land, and even landscaping when it comes to future developments.

“It really encompasses everything that a community uses to plan for the future,” Danberg told northeastNOW. “And that’s why council decided to go and get this updated because it’s been 20 years now since we’ve done this.

“There’s no real specific plan that we really feel that we are going to reference more than another. It’s just that each situation represents different challenges in different areas that we need to reference.”

Lang said with the feedback from the R.M., they will have a meeting with them in November. Meanwhile, Lang said the public input gave them the opportunity to make some minor changes.

The new official community plan also involves a refreshed zoning bylaw when it comes to how the city will approach zoning for future land use.

The plan now moves on to the Ministry of Government Relations for approval there before it is officially brought into play.
