Looking for business leaders

Melfort Business Revitalization Committee AGM on Wednesday

An important meeting for Melfort’s business owners and leaders is being held tomorrow night.

The Melfort Business Revitalization Committee is hosting its annual general meeting at the Kerry Vickar Centre Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.

Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz said it’s a very important meeting for the future of the committee, which was initially focused on the historic Main Street area.

The organization was created to manage the main street program for the city, but that changed after the program was suspended by the provincial government in the 2017 budget.

“Since that time, their role has changed to some degree, and at this meeting they will be passing a resolution to modify their bylaws to extend their scope to all business districts within the city,” Lutz said.

The organization is also looking to expand its board of directors, and they are looking for local business leaders to step up and fill that role.

The closure of the Melfort and District Chamber of Commerce office could also mean a potential expansion of the committee’s role.

“There has been some discussion to look at filling the void that resulted from the closure of the Chamber of Commerce office,” Lutz said. “We’re hoping that the new board will actually be able to make those decisions, and propose what the corporation will do moving forward.”

Lutz said the city has had some involvement in the original organization of the committee but added the business leaders themselves are the ones that know what services their business could benefit from.

He hopes those owners come forward and let their names stand for a position on the board of directors.
