Town of Lanigan named finalist in Kraft Heinz Project Play

A Saskatchewan community has been named a finalist for Kraft Heinz Project Play.

The Town of Lanigan has made the top four as members fundraise for a new pool in the community.

The current pool in Lanigan was built in 1971, and a paddling pool was added in 1972. Chief Administrative Officer with the town, Jennifer Thompson said they would benefit from a new facility.

“It’s just getting a little bit tired right now,” she said. “It just needs a lot of work, so we’ve been fundraising for the Lanigan and District Waterpark since 2015.”

According to Thompson, the new outdoor pool would feature a zero barrier entry for those with mobility issues and young children, a 25-meter Junior Olympic sized swimming pool, a vortex to be used for therapeutic rehabilitation, and a large waterslide. The expected cost is around $2 million, and Thompson said they need about $1 million to break ground.

Currently, the committee and the town have raised just over $750,000 coming from sponsorship, and fundraising efforts. Thompson said the $250,000 grand prize from Project Play would allow them to break ground in the spring of 2020. She said the support they’ve received has been great, and it has given them a boost for Project Play.

“We are more than just the corporate limits of the Town of Lanigan,” Thompson told northeastNOW. “We have lots of support from our smaller communities around us, our rural communities and actually across the province as well. So it’s just a really great thing to see everybody getting behind us and helping us.”

To receive the $250,000 grand prize, Lanigan must receive the most votes of the top four communities.

“We sure could use your help to bring Kraft Heinz Project Play into Saskatchewan, into our community,” Thompson said. “And help us keep and become and continue to be a full service community and provide everybody in the area a wonderful summer activity and community gathering place in Lanigan.”

Voting opens on Friday, Oct. 18 and runs until Sunday, Oct. 20. Lanigan is up against Nepean, Ont., Saugeen Shores, Ont., and Salmon Arm, B.C.
