Liberal candidate hopes to make inroads in Yorkton-Melville

The Liberal candidate in the Yorkton-Melville constituency wants voters to know ‘there’s a lot of room for you under the big red tent.’

Connor Moen has been going door-to-door throughout the riding during the campaign, and said he became involved with the Liberal Party about a year ago.

“I just decided that if I wanted to really have a voice in making a change and kind of seeing how I wanted what this country to look, I kind of had to roll my sleeves up and get involved,” he said.

Disappointment in the leadership of the Conservative Party also led Moen to get more involved in politics.

“I am an LGBTQ2 Canadian and so the reluctance [of Andrew Scheer] to attend Pride, the doubling down on Trans rights, all those things just really didn’t bode well with me,” Moen said. “The Liberal Party, to me, was the best party with the policy sweep of options.”

Moen chose to run in this election to ensure that someone from Saskatchewan was representing the Liberals in the Yorkton-Melville riding.

A major issue in the constituency, according to Moen, is seniors’ needs.

“We have an older population compared to the rest of the country, so we have a lot of conversations talking about old age security, strengthening the CPP (Canada Pension Plan), and the like,” he said.

The economy is another major topic of conversation.

“Given that Saskatchewan has such a diverse resource economy, so it’s really having conversations about how we can best develop that,” Moen said, adding that Saskatchewan had strong job numbers in September. “It’s really talking about how we can really move ahead with the economy while also balancing the needs of the environment.”

Moen’s goal in the campaign is to reach out to people who feel there is no home for them on the political spectrum. He said those who are in between parties across the spectrum often feel left out.

northeastNOW has also conducted interviews with the People’s Party of Canada and New Democratic Party candidates in the Yorkton-Melville constituency, and hope to talk with the Conservative and Green Party representatives.
