Radiothon to raise funds for infant incubator at Melfort hospital

Oct 16, 2019 | 12:00 PM

The North Central Health Care Foundation is gearing up for another 12-hour radiothon on 105 CJVR and Saskatchewan’s New Beach Radio this Friday.

Phone lines will open at 7 a.m., in an effort to raise funds for an infant incubator and equipment updates at the Melfort hospital.

Dr. Yemi Laosebikan is in his 16th year at the hospital. He said the community support in the region is outstanding when it comes to donations during these campaigns.

“We have almost always reached our target so I’m optimistic that this year will be the same,” Laosibekan said. “We are really counting on everyone to chip in and help maintain healthcare.”

A radiothon in 2017 brought in around $165,000. The incubator costs around $60,000.

Anything above and beyond that amount would also be of benefit since the need for equipment updates never goes away.

Everyone is in need of the hospital in one way or another according to Laosebikan.

“It’s a major employer, the health care delivery here is one of the best in the area,” Laosibekan said. “We have a good pool of general practitioners, family physicians and even nurses. The whole team is very vital.”

The radiothon will kick off with a pancake breakfast at the Melfort Curling rink from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. with all money raised to go toward the campaign.

Melfort hospital is one of the hospitals in the region that still does obstetrics, making the incubator an important purchase.

“The equipment is necessary for taking care of the little ones when they are born to ensure that they remain stable, healthy, and well,” Laosibekan said.
