Habitat build in Melfort

Work starts on new Habitat for Humanity build in Melfort

Melfort Habitat for Humanity’s third build is underway.

The property on 404 Burrows Ave. W. will be the first Habitat build in the city since 2017.

Project Manager Terry Thurrott told northeastNOW workers dug a hole, and the footings were poured last Friday.

“We’ve had most of the services provided on the site so far free of charge, which was greatly appreciated,” Thurrott said. “The contractors will be acknowledged here throughout the course of this build.”

A number of contractors in the area have been contacted by Thurrott about interest in the project, or to provide bids, so the build can continue.

Thurrott admits the timing of the build isn’t necessarily ideal as winter approaches.

“Skilled labour in the city—the contractors, the professionals that we’re going to be relying on for this—are busy cleaning up their own work and looking after their own clients,” Therrott said. “We’re certainly hoping that they can squeeze some time in to help us with this. Again anything at all is appreciated, and even if it’s a day or two, or if there is a couple days, then that’s great.”

Anyone with a construction background or anyone that’s handy can contribute by calling Therrott at 1-306-920-7997. He said he has to co-ordinate all labour to ensure people’s safety, and that the project continues in proper sequence.

Therrot said the three bedroom bungalow will be about 1,000 square feet with a drywalled, unfinished basement.

He would like the home to be closed in before the worst of the winter weather arrives.

The project is expected to be complete early next year.
