$11,000 raised for Smile Cookie Week in Humboldt, money going toward safe beds

The Humboldt and District Hospital Foundation (HDHF) has been on the receiving end of Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Week before, although the City of Humboldt’s generosity has never been higher than in 2019.

Over $11,000 was raised for the HDHF was raised after the Humboldt Tim Hortons sold 11,023 chocolate chunk cookies with a smile on top made of frosting from Sept. 16 to 22.

Lorrie Bunko, executive director for the HDHF, said she and the Humboldt Tim Hortons owner Dan Grywacheski never set a goal for a dollar amount, but they both wanted to top the $8,500 raised in 2018. She was in shock when she saw the final amount raised.

“It doesn’t matter if you don’t beat [last year], that’s really not important in the grand scheme of things,” Bunko said. “We just like to always do a little personal challenge for ourselves. I would have never thought it was $11,000.”

The $11,000 will go toward the purchase of safe beds for the Humboldt District Hospital’s new safe rooms to provide a safe, comfortable environment for mental health and addiction patients.

“We thought if we could get even one bed covered – just over $7,000 – that would be fantastic,” Bunko said. “With the $11,000, we were able to purchase both beds. We’re very grateful for Tim Hortons, Dan, and his staff for the hard work they do that week. It’s very labour intensive and they were busy, and the staff always had a smile on their face when we went in there to pick up orders.”

The safe beds for the Humboldt District Hospital have been ordered and will be put into immediate use.
