The 2019 Achievement in Business Excellence (ABEX) awards were handed out by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce over the weekend in Saskatoon with a Humboldt business being recognized.

Mike and Shannon Yager of Spotlight Sport and Corporate Wear were on hand to accept the community involvement award.

Mike said just giving back to the community feels great in itself and the award is an added bonus.

“It’s obviously an honour to be recognized at a provincial level for doing good for people; it kind of validates us as an ethical company,” Yager said. “There aren’t very many businesses in our province that gets that kind of recognition and we are humbled.”

Spotlight sold over 12,000 T-shirts and items in their “We are Humboldt Strong” campaign following the Broncos bus crash. Over $304,000 was donated to the Humboldt Strong Community Foundation.

Not only do they own the apparel customization and promotional product store, they also own and operate the Real Attractions movie theatre.

“Community has always been near and dear to my heart on a personal basis so it’s not hard to motivate the people around you to get excited about it as well,” Yager said.

Yager has served on numerous boards in several communities, and finds it important to volunteer on a regular basis.

“Just helping people and seeing the reaction and the good you are doing just makes you feel like you are contributing on a larger scale,” Yager said.

Spotlight was a finalist in the marketing category in 2015, 2017, and 2019 at the ABEX awards.

“It’s incredible to be surrounded by such electricity in the air and the best of the best of businesses in Saskatchewan are there,” Yager said. “To be recognized on a provincial level is top shelf.”

Yager added they are very appreciative of the individuals and other businesses in the Humboldt area that support them.

“It all boils down to support from the community to us that we are able to give it back,” he said.
