Stanley Cup coming to Porcupine Plain to raise funds for Chase Place upgrades

Oct 23, 2019 | 1:28 PM

The town of Porcupine Plain is gearing up for the arrival of the Stanley Cup.

A fundraising event on Thursday night at the town hall will play host to Kelly Chase, St. Louis Blues alumni along with the cup.

Committee Member Craig Kriger said this is a great opportunity for the whole area.

“I think all of the surrounding areas will be coming out,” Kriger said. “Small town communities in winter are mostly spent down at the rink so I think it’s going to mean a lot to the younger generation that has never seen the cup before as well.”

Proceeds from the event will go toward minor hockey in the community and replacing the boiler at the Chase Place arena. The replacement of the aging boiler comes with a $20,000 price tag.

“We started fundraising last year for it so hopefully this will get us a bit closer to our goal,” Kriger said.

Around $3,500 was brought in last year through a hockey draft which they will hold again on Sunday, Nov. 10.

A burger and a drink for $5 will be available starting at 5 p.m. The Stanley Cup arrives at 6 p.m. Photo opportunities with the cup will cost $5. There will also be a live auction, bucket draws, and a 50/50 draw which is guaranteed at $500.

“We have been fortunate to have the cup here in Porcupine Plain twice now,” Kriger said. “It came here back in 2005 when Kelly brought it down for a day and now we get to have it again.”

The Stanley Cup will be on hand at the event until 9 p.m.
