City of Melfort gets provincial award for Spruce Haven project

Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) awards were handed out over the weekend with Melfort being recognized.

The city was given the 2019 Cecil Nobes Facility Award of Excellence for the Spruce Haven Recreation Park.

Facility Manager Leonard Whitney said the award is the icing on the cake with the big project and extensive work put in at Spruce Haven Park.

“Tree trimming and stuff like that to try and clean up the area and of course with the new playground and spray park out there, there was some work involved for sure but we met our time frames and everything has been a great success,” Whitney said.

The area boasts the skate park soccer pitches, ball diamonds, and the community garden along with the new playground and spray pad.

Whitney said the team involved is very proud of the hardware they were able to bring home from SPRA.

“It’s always amazing when you can get a provincial award, especially because we had some bigger centres that we were up against,” Whitney said.

Future developments will be happening in the Spruce Haven area eventually but nothing is quite concrete as of yet, according to Whitney.

“Definitely it is going to be an ongoing project for the city,” Whitney said.

The criteria to be nominated for the award is for an outstanding community that demonstrates forward thinking on a new facility with unique and outstanding design.

Whitney also extended thanks to Helen Obrigewitch of the Lakeland District for Sports, Culture and Recreation for nominating the project for the award.
