Snow, strong winds expected in northeast: Environment Canada

Oct 25, 2019 | 12:00 PM

The weekend weather forecast is just a taste of what’s to come this winter.

A weather system making its way through the northeast is expected to bring rain, snow, and strong wind.

Today’s relatively mild conditions will soon change, according to Terri Lang with Environment Canada.

“Rain is expected to develop probably late this evening towards midnight, it will switch to snow overnight, and we are expecting…maybe five centimetres of snow,” Lang said.

The level of snow depends on how much it will melt when it hits the warm ground. Temperatures are expected to fall to below freezing Saturday, and that won’t change for several days.

To further complicate matters, wind gusts could reach 80 km/h overnight, with the breezy conditions continuing throughout Saturday.

“Winds will stay gusty northwesterly, probably 40 gusting to 60 km/h through the day,” Lang predicted. “Combined with that snow and falling temperatures it’s going to make for some tricky driving conditions, particularly in the morning in the Melfort area.”

People are urged to check the Highway Hotline before travelling over the next 24 hours or so, with conditions expected to vary across the province.

The northeast is expected to receive the most snow in Saskatchewan, while the south should have the strongest wind.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for much of next week.
