Co-operative Place in Wynyard holds grand opening

After over a year of construction, Co-operative Place in Wynyard is officially open to the public.

The Town of Wynyard held a grand opening on Friday, Oct. 25 to celebrate to long-awaited project for the area. Chief Administrative Officer Jason CHorneyko said the project was huge for the area.

“It’s not just for the town of Wynayrd,” he said. “It’s going to be a big draw in the entire area. It’s quite an impressive building. People have been watching it go up right from the ground breaking up until today.”

Ground breaking for the project was held in April 2018. The new recreation facility has plenty of uses for those in the area. Not only does it feature a rink, but it includes a walking track, mezzanine for events, and soon it will be home to the clubhouse for the golf course. The new facility was needed due to the old rink in Wynyard being over 50 years old.

“It was on it’s last legs,” Chorneyko said. “And we had engineering reports that had given it a limited lifespan.”

The old rink was a ‘wooden arch’ style of build, something Chorneyko said isn’t very common anymore in Saskatchewan.

According to Chorneyko, there is still a few minor touch ups to get done, but the schedule for the arena and the facility as a whole will be in full swing.

There was also an auction to have the first skate at the new rink which raised $6,000 going towards the facility that is to cost about $11.4 Million. When it comes to fundraising, there has been about $1.8 Million dollars pledged.
