Mustangs protect home ice against rival Hawks

The Melfort Mustangs got back in the win column on Friday, Oct. 25 in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

The Mustangs defeated their rivals 5-2 at the Northern Lights Palace, just days after falling 4-2 to the Yorkton Terriers. Mustang forward Zach Anderson had a goal and an assist in the win and said this win felt really good.

“Not going to lie,” he said. “I think I’m always a little bit more fired up, and a little bit more energetic playing Nipawin, just because I don’t like them. At all.”

It was the Mustangs first win against the Hawks this season after falling on opening weekend in back-to-back 3-0 games.

On this night it didn’t take long for the Mustangs to get on the scoresheet as Ben Tkachuk used some patience and found Ben Chase back door for his second of the season. That was the only offence in the period that saw Melfort outshoot Nipawin 11-5.

Nipawin came back firing in the second though, getting a few chances early, but Shawn Parkinson stood tall in the Melfort net. Adam Nobes scored his first as a Mustangs at the 13:12 mark of the period to make it 2-0, but the Hawks didn’t let the two-goal deficit stand for long as Eric Sorensen scored on the powerplay and Michael Makarenko scored shorthanded to tie the game before the end of the second period. Anderson said they let off a little bit in the second, but came back better in the third.

“In the third period, we started off a little slow,” Anderson said. “But we definetly picked it back up and showed Nipawin who the Mustangs really are.”

Colton Schell restored the Mustangs lead just over a minute in on the powerplay, then about 13 minutes later, Anderson got hauled down on a breakaway and was given a penalty shot. He undressed Hawks netminder Ethan Slobodzian and made it 4-2 Melfort.

“I saw it on the internet one day,” Anderson told northeastNOW. “And then I just practiced it in practice, and I was like ‘you know what, might as well give it a shot’, don’t get a lot penalty shots here or even shootouts, so why not try it and it worked.”

Greg Parker scored into the empty net with about a minute and a half remaining to make it 5-2 and that was the hockey game.

Melfort moves to 11-3-2-1 on the year while Nipawin falls to 9-7-0-0. They meet again on Saturday, Oct. 26 in Nipawin.
