Mustangs fall to Hawks

Late penalties hurt Mustangs in loss to Hawks

Oct 27, 2019 | 9:29 AM

There was apparently some sort of home ice advantage in this weekend’s home and home set between the Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks.

On Friday, the Mustangs defeated the Hawks 5-2 in Melfort. That was followed by a 2-1 Hawks win on Saturday, in Nipawin.

It was a quiet first period with not much entered on the scoresheet. Nipawin had two powerplays but were unsuccessful. The Hawks also had the majority of the chances, outshooting the Mustangs 13-6.

In the second, the Mustangs finally broke through. The puck found it’s way to the net where Tyson Meyers wacked at it numerous times before it crossed the goal line. That was followed by a pileup in front, but the goal counted to make it 1-0 Melfort after two periods.

The Hawks came back firing in the third. It didn’t take them long to tie it as on the teams fifth powerplay of the night, Zach Cox sniped one by Shawn Parkinson to tie it up, just over two minutes in. On the next Hawk powerplay, their sixth of the night, Jake Tremblay scored his sixth of the year to give the Hawks the lead. Mustangs Assistant Coach Trevor Logan said when it comes to barns like Nipawin, there’s an adjustment for new players, but they have to be ready to play a full 60 minutes.

“There’s a little hesitation and then we don’t get into those battles,” he said. “And we get out manned and they come out with the puck.”

He added that the penalties killed them as well.

“Discipline was a bit of a difference here tonight,” Logan said. “We didn’t win the special teams and that was something we talked about.”

The Mustangs pressed hard in the final 10 minutes or so, but could not beat Ross Hawryluk who stopped 23 of 24. His counterpart Shawn Parkinson stopped 29 of 31 for Melfort.

The loss drops Melfort to 11-4-2-1, while Nipawin improves to 10-6-0-0. The rivals don’t meet again until December.
