Multimillion dollar Nipawin bridge project nearing completion

Oct 28, 2019 | 12:00 PM

After a summer of traffic stops and lower speed limits, residents and travelers in the Nipawin area will soon be able to drive across the Highway 55 bridge north of the town with no delays.

Stantec – an engineering firm in charge of the bridge’s construction – provided an update to the Town of Nipawin on Friday, Oct. 25 with a projected completion date being the first week of November.

Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s chief administrative officer, told northeastNOW the town appreciates Stantec’s consistent communication regarding the near $8 million bridge project that is funded by the province.

“I understand the contractors finished paving the bridge, although there’s still work being done on curb and guardrail,” Elliott said. “There’s still some travel restrictions in place and some elements of effect to the speed and occasional waiting time. The work is progressing well, so we’re pleased it’s reached the point it has and we’re very much looking forward to them completing the project in its entirety.”

The contractor said the speed limit on the bridge won’t be raised back up to 50 km/h until they raise the guardrail on the working side. However, no more complete traffic stops are expected.

“The contactor certainly appreciates the patience of the traveling public,” Elliott said. “They certainly want to remind everyone to please be cautious in the area of construction. They regret that, but I know they’re working diligently at it.”

Elliott said the contactor hasn’t informed the town that snowfall could be a factor in creating further delays.
