Funeral today for teen boy who passed away in collision claiming three lives

Jerome Coulineur, the 14-year-old boy who passed away in a motor-vehicle collision last week, is being laid to rest today in Canoe Lake.

Jans Bay Mayor Joyce Maurice said a wake service was held for the young boy during the last two days. Another wake service will held Friday in Jans Bay for one-year-old Kinzey Iron-Coulineur before a funeral is held Saturday in Canoe Lake.

“Right now, if anyone within the community needs any debriefing counselling from the mental health workers out of Île-à-la-Crosse, if we need any help we’re supposed to get a hold of them,” Maurice said. “We are supporting the families in any which way we can.”

On Oct. 25, the two children, as well as Meadow Lake paramedic Leigh Schroeder, died after a collision on Highway 155 involving a truck and an ambulance. Two other people in the truck and the other person in the ambulance, which was responding to another collision, were taken to the hospital because of their injuries. One of the people sent to hospital was the grandfather of the little girl who died and, as an uncle, is also the foster parent of the teen boy who lost his life.

Another child, also from Jans Bay, was sent to hospital as well.

“He is still in the hospital,” Maurice said of the older man. “He had an emergency surgery two mornings ago. I haven’t had an update about how he is doing now. As far as I know, he’s still in the hospital.”

A memorial service will take place Friday in Regina for Schroeder and the family asked anyone who wants to make a donation to make it to the Katepwa Lake Camp.

As of Oct. 31, a GoFundMe account to raise money to assist with funeral costs and financial support for the families of the two children reached $3,750 of a $5,000 goal.
