‘Hockey for Men’s Health’ taking over Carrot River for Movember

With November finally here, you may start to see some men growing out their facial hair more than usual.

The eleventh month of the year, sometime called ‘Movember’ has men growing their moustaches to raise money, and awareness for men’s health.

In Carrot River, they are doing ‘Hockey for Men’s Health’ this year in conjunction with the Carrot River and District Recreation Board. Local emergency services people including RCMP, EMS, and members of the fire department as they grow their ‘lip sweaters’ and raise some money. The initiative began with local RCMP officer Const. Dylan Custaloe, who approached the Town of Carrot River.

“We’ve never really done it in Carrot River,” Recreation Coordinator Miranda Blaber said. “It’s time for us to kind of jump on board and help raise awareness and support too, so we were game.”

The month of raising funds and awareness will culminate in a hockey game at the Carrot River Arena on Nov. 30 where the emergency service personnel will play against some of the high school students who will also be growing their moustaches and raising money. Blaber said the game will have a 50/50 and they hope to sell some moustache cookies as well with the funds going toward Movember.

She added in Carrot River they always try to give people things to do whether it be as a participant, or a spectator which is why something like this is a good thing for the community.

“But we also like to encourage community development and quality of living,” Blaber told northeastNOW. “And men’s health matters just as much as children’s, seniors’, or women, and Movember kind of pushes for that. It’s something that’s been going on for a while and we thought it was important to be a part of that.”

Blaber commended the men who got involved in the initiative and she encouraged those in the community to support them.

The Carrot River and District Recreation Board will be updated their website and Facebook page with updated pictures of all the participants in the ‘Hockey for Men’s Health’ event. People can donate through the link on the Facebook page or their website.
