Mustangs defeat Broncos

Veterans key as Mustangs come back to defeat Broncos

Nov 10, 2019 | 9:03 AM

After a pair of losses this week, the Melfort Mustangs got back into the win column in exciting fashion on Saturday in Humboldt at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

The Mustangs defeated the Broncos 5-4 in overtime in a come from behind win.

Things started well for Melfort as they got the first big chance of the hockey game, but Broncos netminder Brendan Forman wasn’t having any of it. The Broncos got the first tally of the hockey game as Zach McIntyre picked off a Mustang clearing attempt and was able to fire a backhand past Shawn Parkinson to make it 1-0. With 35 seconds to play in the period, Jake Hobson fired a seeing eye shot through a crowd that beat Forman to tie the game 1-1.

Period number two saw Humboldt take the reins of the hockey game. Jackson Bohan scored just over a minute in to give Humboldt the 2-1 lead. Adam Nobes tied it for Melfort about five minutes in, but after that Humboldt took charge. Logan Foster scored 12 minutes in, and then Tristan Shewchuk notched a shorthanded goal late to make it 4-2, putting the Mustangs back against the wall in the third.

“Say what you will, it’s our third game in five days,” said Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins. “I didn’t expect to come in here and dominate tonight, but it was a character third period.”

In that third, the switch flipped for Melfort. Kenzie Arnold scored four minutes in to bring things back to within one. That was followed by plenty of chances and offensive zone time for the Mustangs, but no goals to show for it. That was until there was 15 seconds left when Jake Hobson’s shot was stopped by the pad of Forman, but the rebound came right to Alex Rondeau who was waiting in the right wing circle to fire a shot past Forman, forcing overtime.

In overtime, just a minute and a half in, Jake Hobson fed Alex Rondeau at the top of the zone. Rondeau was able to split a pair of Broncos and cut to the net where he dropped the puck for Kenzie Arnold who then fired a wrist shot by Forman to win the game for Melfort 5-4.

“Regardless of the result, I really was impressed with our third period, and we got rewarded,” Blevins said. “And that’s hockey, when you work hard for it, you get rewarded sometimes.”

Rondeau, Hobson, and Nobes led the way with three points for Melfort in the victory. They improve to 14-6-2-1 on the year, good for 31 points and sole possession of first place in the Sherwood Division.

The Mustangs are back in action Saturday, Nov. 16 in Melfort hosting the Kindersley Klippers.
