Bye bye cold

Cold weather heading East, warmth coming our way

Nov 12, 2019 | 11:37 AM

A frigid weekend in the northeast is making way for some much warmer weather later this week.

Temperatures reached -25 Celsius overnight on Sunday, and it was even colder when you factor in the wind chill.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang said it likely felt especially cold because we are not yet used to the winter temperatures.

“No records were set. It was close,” Lang said. “The records this time of year are around the mid -20’s, but we know when it gets below -20 C and you get a little wind in there, it makes it feel a heck of a lot colder.”

The good news is the forecast is favourable for the rest of the week, if not longer.

“We’re seeing an overall big shift in the weather pattern,” Lang said. “We had kind of this big blob of really cold air over all of Western Canada – not just Saskatchewan, but all of Western Canada – and that’s starting to make a shift to the east.”

She said it’s been a cool start to fall.

“October was below average [temperature-wise] and we’ve certainly come into November below average. It’s running probably about five to six degrees below 30-year averages,” Lang said. “That happened last year, too.”

With that shift comes a significant warming trend, and temperatures should climb above the freezing mark toward the weekend. Little to no precipitation is expected through the rest of the week.

Lang said those heading to the CFL West Division Final between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Regina will enjoy those warm temperatures, but there will likely be strong wind coming from the south or southeast.

She said highway driving could be a little tricky later this week as the snow that blows across the highway melts during the day, but freezes as it cools off overnight.

“Make sure to check the Highway Hotline before heading out,” Lang said.
