Major penalty sinks Mustangs against Ice Wolves

Nov 21, 2019 | 8:28 AM

The Melfort Mustangs dropped a physical affair 3-1 on Wednesday, Nov. 20 as they welcomed the La Ronge Ice Wolves to the Northern Lights Palace.

Things were nasty right from puck drop as Mustang Seth McCulloch and former Mustang Kyle Schneider got into a tussle right off the opening draw. Both went to the box for two minutes, creating some space with four-on-four early. That led to a Ryley Lanthier chance where he scored his sixth of the season just over a minute in to give Melfort the lead. The teams went back and forth for the rest of the first with no further change to the scoresheet.

In the third, it seemed Melfort was driving most of the play until about eight and a half minutes into the period where Colton Schell laid a hit on Ice Wolve forward Booker Chacalias, injuring him. That led to a five minute powerplay for La Ronge. Kyle Ford scored his thirteenth of the year early in the man advantage, while Kaiden Collumb added another later in the powerplay to make it 2-1 Ice Wolves in a matter of minutes.

After the game Lanthier said even though that’s where the score turned, he couldn’t quite pinpoint a true turning point.

“Honestly I’m not too sure,” he said. “We just need to be harder on pucks. That’s a team thing that we need to work on.”

The Mustangs did all they could in the third, but Liam McGarva stood tall for the Ice Wolves. His teammates in front of him also blocked plenty of shots in the third, and throughout the contest. Daylon Mannon added an empty netter late to make it 3-1.

“We had our opportunities, we just have to bear down,” Lanthier said. “And we’ll be ready for Saturday.”

That Saturday night contest is a matchup with the Flin Flon Bombers at the Whitney Forum. The Mustangs and Bombers are currently tied for first in the Sherwood Division with 33 points.
