A mixed bag of weather for your weekend: Environment Canada

A warm start to the weekend could give way to snowfall on Sunday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting a high of 7 Celsius for Saturday.

“The 30-year average is around -7 C, and overnight lows around -15 C, so it’s really a bonus when we get these types of temperatures at this time of year,” Meteorologist Terri Lang said.

A low pressure system moving into the Northwest Territories is bringing up some warm air and sunshine over the next couple of days.

“There is a very slight risk of freezing rain overnight into Saturday morning,” Lang said.

On Sunday another low pressure system is moving through central Saskatchewan which risks freezing rain then snow.

“Temperatures are going to cool off and that’s when that snow will move in, and then we’re going to see the temperatures take a slow slide for the remainder of the week,” Lang said.

The snow is expected to arrive late in the afternoon or early evening on Sunday, but Lang said it should only be a couple of centimetres that fall.

The wind could pick up slightly as it cools off on Sunday as well. Lang recommended people check the Highway Hotline before they travel in case of blowing and drifting snow, and icy conditions.

Temperatures for next week will fall into more seasonal conditions, while later in the week it could be below normal.

Lang said the next couple of days would be a great time to take advantage of the warmer weather.

“Get out there, hang up the Christmas lights, and get the stuff done before it does turn cold again,” she said.
