Volunteers, board members being sought by Arts Humboldt

Nov 22, 2019 | 12:00 PM

Those interested in the arts are being invited to the Arts Humboldt annual general meeting.

The meeting will be held in a classroom at Humboldt Collegiate Institute at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

Secretary Caitlin Senko said the non-profit organization hosts events with local artists, the Sound Cheque Showcase, and the Missoula Children’s Theatre.

“It’s nice to see people come together and appreciate the arts and appreciate music that we don’t always get to hear,” Senko said. “We’ve brought in jazz groups and folks groups and it’s nice to have a different touch from other parts of Canada to Humboldt.”

Humboldt is fortunate enough to have a couple of arts groups including the Humboldt and District Museum and Gallery but Arts Humboldt really looks to fill some voids that exist.

“The music part of the arts area that wasn’t being filled at one point in Humboldt is where the group has stepped in,” Senko said.

Missoula Children’s Theatre had come to Humboldt for many years but then the group who was bringing them in was no longer able to do that. Arts Humboldt came to fruition to bring the theatre back and has grown from there.

The Sound Cheque Showcase is a contest in which a local emerging artist can win a chance to record their own single. The 2019 winner was Megan Brooks.

“Our goal is to at some point help provide furnishing and fundraising to then hopefully get a new theatre or arts centre of some sort,” Senko said.

The group is looking for new volunteers as well as board members at the AGM.

“If you come, you aren’t forced into helping, but just come and learn a little more about the group and see if you are wanting to get a bit involved,” Senko said.

Volunteers typically help with set-up and take down of events. Board members can get a little more involved with ideas and helping with the planning stages of the events.

“If you are interested in any type of art whether it be theatre, music, or painting, then we are looking for you,” she said.
