Kick off to Christmas

City of Humboldt bringing back Community Tree Lighting event

The City of Humboldt is bringing back an old tradition to kick off the Christmas season.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, the city is holding a Community Tree Lighting at City Hall.

Penny Lee with the City of Humboldt said the tree lighting used to be a big event in Humboldt, but it hasn’t been done since the early 2000s. She said people she talked to remember coming to the tree lighting as far back as the 1990s.

“It’s kind of got lost along the way over time, as things do,” Lee told northeastNOW. “Every year it seems like new Christmas traditions make their way into our lives and festivities, and somewhere along the line we end up losing track of some of those old traditions.”

The city trimmed the 30-foot tree and strung about 50 strings of lights, totalling 1,375 bulbs according to Lee.

She said events like this foster community spirit.

“We need more community events like this happening in Humboldt,” Lee said. “And bringing fun and spirit into the community, as a community is extremely important to us.”

At the tree lighting event, attendees are encouraged to bring donations such as non-perishable food items, toys, and blankets for families in need. Lee said over the last 18 or 19 months, the City of Humboldt has been the recipients of lots of giving, and now it’s time for them to return the favour.

“We want to start giving back,” she said. “Christmas is the best time to do it.”

The festivities start at Humboldt City Hall at 4:30 p.m. and the tree lighting will take place at sunset.

Lee added this is just the beginning of events during the Christmas season for the city. One of the big events is a decoration contest where people can nominate their homes, or their neighbours’ homes for their Christmas decorations. The mayor and council will then judge the homes.
