Melody Motors ‘We Scare Hunger’ campaign brings in over 11,000 pounds of food

It was a record year for the Melody Motors ‘We Scare Hunger’ campaign.

A total of 14 schools across the northeast region participated in the 2019 campaign, and 11,348 pounds of food were collected for local food banks.

For the campaign, Melody Motors sets up hampers in their member schools for October. From there, the schools do what they can to bring in as many non-perishable food items as possible.

“We had excellent participation,” Melody Motors General Manager Ken Madraga said. “I was very happy to hear how many schools did so many different things, and I found that very exciting.”

Madraga said some schools did competitions between classrooms, some did bingos to make sure they had a multitude of different foods being brought, some also had students bring items for donation as entry for school dances. One school even did a ‘domino effect’ with Kraft Dinner boxes.

Members of Melody Motors were also at various events throughout the northeast during the month as well including Melfort Mustangs, and Tisdale Trojans hockey games. People could also bring donations to the dealership to fill up the bed of one of their trucks.

Madraga added the campaign not only collects food, but teaches a good lesson to young students.

“To see them be so happy, and to then understand why they’re doing this and who it all helps,” he said. “I think it’s great to teach the community that this is what it takes to be a member is to support everybody else in the community, because we’re all not as fortunate.”

Madraga said they want to continue growing the campaign every year, and next year he said they may go door to door to get some donations as well.
