First Nations Environmental Contaminants Program

Learn about the First Nations Environmental Contaminants Program (FNECP), who can apply for funding and how to apply.

Indigenous Services Canada provides funding through the FNECP to help First Nations communities improve their health. The program supports these communities in identifying, investigating and characterizing the impact of exposure to environmental hazards. Its activities include community-based:

• research
• monitoring
• risk assessment
• risk communication

• First Nations communities (on reserve) and organizations south of the 60° parallel from:
  • Alberta
  • Manitoba
  • Saskatchewan
  • Ontario
  • Quebec
  • Atlantic Canada
• bands
• districts
• councils
• tribal councils and associations
• governments of self-governing First Nations communities and regions
• non-government and voluntary associations and organizations
  • these include non-profit corporations that work on behalf of, or in partnership with, a First Nations community

First Nations in British Columbia should apply for funding under the First Nations Health Authority Environmental Contaminants Program.

Special requirement for funding

The FNECP requires all funded projects to be carried out in partnership with academically trained scientists, at the PhD or MD level, and the academic partners must be identified as a partner in the proposal.

What contaminants are included

Any chemical or biological contaminants that are of concern to First Nations communities can be included in your proposal, based on potential human health risk due to exposure. This risk must be articulated and justified in the proposal.

Deadline

Complete proposals must be received by Indigenous Services Canada no later than 11:59 pm Mountain Time, January 6th, 2020.

• provide you with an application guide and proposal template to help you with your submission
• provide advice on project ideas, how to submit a proposal and if you meet the conditions to apply
• review and provide feedback on draft proposals
