City of Melfort urging people to obey signage at work sites

The City of Melfort is hoping to promote safety for their workers and the public when it comes to work zones.

The discussion comes after a City of Melfort Facebook post about a vehicle that collided with a barricade on Shadd Drive Thursday morning, Nov. 28 and fled the scene.

The city said on its Facebook page there were ‘road closed’ and ‘men working’ signs at both ends of the road.

Soon after the first vehicle hit the barricade, another vehicle drove through the work area after driving over the downed barricade.

Kevin Dyck, a risk management technician for the City of Melfort, said there was a contractor working on an elevated lift at the time.

“We don’t want traffic going through there for the risk of knocking over or running into that [platform],” he said.

Dyck said there are times when roads are blocked off because there is heavy equipment like tandem trucks loading and unloading material, or an excavator working with a large hole, such as a water main break. Those types of work zones can be especially hazardous, both for the public and the workers themselves.

The City is also urging people to observe any barricades ahead of any major snow removal operations.

Dyck said most people respect the work area and obey the detours.

“The majority of people do drive either one block over or actually even go down the back alley behind wherever we are doing our work,” he said.

Drivers are also urged watch for workers directing traffic and heavy equipment moving into and out of the work zones.

“Everyone wants to go home safe at the end of the day,” Dyck said.
