Huge donation from Humboldt Good Neighbour Store

Dec 4, 2019 | 11:20 AM

The Humboldt Good Neighbour Store proved to be a good neighbour with their annual disbursement this week.

The store has disbursed $300,000 to 44 different organizations in Humboldt and area.

“It’s one of the best days of the year for me,” Chairperson Maureen Doetzel said.

The organization has been in operation for 26 years in Humboldt, and Doetzel said they take donated items from the public and repurpose them.

“It’s like a big garage sale, I guess,” she said. “We get it in the one door check it, clean it, and we price it and we put it on the shelf, and it goes out the other door.”

Doetzel said the success would not be possible without their team of 170 volunteers and board members.

A group of churches, headed by Harry Rose and his wife from the Anglican Church, started the Good Neighbour Store and the disbursements in 1992.

“They just decided that too much was going into the landfill and they wanted to see if they could help out some of the needy people,” she said.

The amount of money generated through the store since its opening is staggering.

“To date we’ve given away $3,457,000 to Humboldt and area organizations,” Doetzel said.

The store thanks both donors and shoppers for their support.
