Skating with Santa while supporting Christmas hamper campaign

Dec 4, 2019 | 11:45 AM

The Northern Lights Palace Arena will once again host Santa and friends this Sunday.

Skate with Santa will feature hot chocolate, music, cookies as well as skating.

Recreation Programmer with the City of Melfort Shannon Marshall said the event is in support of the Salvation Army’s Christmas Hamper program.

“We are asking for donations of new, unwrapped toys or food or cash donations and the Salvation Army will be on hand that day,” Marshall said.

Along with Santa himself, there will be elves, a gingerbread man, Elsa and Olaf, and the Grinch. Other mascots on hand will be Sally Ann from Salvation Army, Affinity’s Fat Cat and the green pig.

The event gets bigger and better each year according to Marshall.

“There were over 150 participants last year so we are looking for even more this year,” Marshall said.

Affinity Credit Union is a major event sponsor this year again and will be providing Christmas oranges, candy canes, colouring sheets and Affinity merchandise.

KidSport has also got on board and will bring tattoos and balloons.

105CJVR and Saskatchewan’s New Beach Radio will be on location for the day to provide music and announcements.

Marshall said they didn’t have an exact total of donations brought in at last year’s event, just that it was very successful.

“We had a huge box for toys, and again those toys, food and cash donations all went to the Salvation Army Christmas hamper program,” Marshall said. “It is a fantastic program right in our community and we want to support that.”

The event gets underway at noon and runs until 1:30 p.m.
