Melfort Trade Alliance welcomed hundreds for first Christmas-themed festival

The Sights, Sounds, and Smells of Christmas wasn’t just an alliteration-filled name for an event.

On Saturday, Nov. 30, the Melfort Trade Alliance’s (MTA) first Christmas-themed event saw hundreds of spectators – from Melfort and other communities – participate in wagon rides, crokicurling, carolling, and petting zoos across the city.

The MTA drew inspiration for the first-time Christmas festival with the amount business and organizations making their space available. Such as Melfort Mall, City Hall, the Historic Post Office, and Memorial Garden.

“Every time you have a chance to let people into the city and be able to do some different locations you do it,” MTA Treasurer Tara Muntain said. “I think that was a key aspect. The MTA is all about cohesiveness and I think this was a nice step in that direction. Being able to partner with the different organizations and businesses to step up and do something, it’s what we’re about.”

While the MTA has been around for years, formally being known as the Melfort Business Revitalization Corporation, Muntain said they’re taking a different approach of how they want to have business in Melfort work together and encourage economic growth. She drew comparisons to how a chamber of commerce or a business improvement district operates.

Muntain isn’t sure if the Sights, Sounds, and Smells of Christmas will change how the MTA operates in the future, although she hopes to see another Christmas-themed event for 2020.

“Because we’re still fairly new, we’re trying different things to see what works with the business that are involved,” she said. “We’ll grow with them or change them as needed.

The MTA has events for the next calendar year planned to promote economic growth within Melfort, such as Touch-a-Truck and the Back Alley Tour in the summer, and a Mardi Gras themed event on Feb. 29.
