Mustangs Fall In Weyburn

Mustangs open southern swing with loss to Weyburn

Dec 14, 2019 | 8:56 AM

The Melfort Mustangs opened their final southern swing of the year with a loss on Friday.

The Mustangs fell 3-2 in Weyburn against the Red Wings and Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins said there was some good, but also some bad.

“We just need a bit more edge obviously throughout the whole 60, and it is what it is,” Blevins said. “It wasn’t a horrible effort, but it wasn’t a great one. We just need to sharpen up for tomorrow.”

The Red Wings opened the scoring on the powerplay as Braden Birnie finished off a nice passing play. That was the only scoring in the first two periods. Melfort got some excellent chances, especially in the second, but couldn’t seem to beat Noah Decottignies who stopped 19 shots through two periods.

In the third however, the Mustangs finally got on the scoresheet when Christian Albertson scored his first goal since coming back from a lengthy injury absence. That was just three and a half minutes into the period. Jaxon Tait gave Weyburn the lead back almost 10 minutes later but Kenzie Arnold tied things back up with his 15th of the year just 30 seconds after.

The teams went back and forth until about two minutes remained when a scrum in front of the Mustangs net led the referees to call a penalty shot for the Red Wings because the Mustangs player had covered the puck in the crease. Quinto Hill made no mistake on the penalty shot and gave Weyburn the lead late. Even with a late powerplay, the Mustangs couldn’t get one more to tie it up. Blevins said the penalty shot maybe deflated the team.

“It’s just really disheartening because I thought we had a chance to get two points here tonight or at least one,” he said. “But we have to re-group for tomorrow.”

Melfort is in Estevan on Saturday evening to wrap up their southern swing.
