Mustangs Fall to Bruins

Mustangs fall to Bruins, return home without a win

Dec 15, 2019 | 8:50 AM

The Melfort Mustangs return home from their second, and final southern road swing of the year without a point to show for it.

Just one night after falling in a 3-2 match with the Weyburn Red Wings. The Mustangs dropped a 3-1 decision to the Estevan Bruins on Saturday.

With two defencemen hurt or sick, the Mustangs dressed five defencemen for the contest, and a couple of unfortunate turnovers cost the Mustangs two goals in the game. Assistant Coach Trevor Logan said it’s kind of trial by fire with some of their younger blueliners.

“We understand there’s going to be some mistakes happening as we get some growth with those guys,” he said. “And I think overall, we just have some guys in and out of the lineup and coming back from injury, and some new guys. I just don’t think we’ve gelled yet.”

One of the main defencemen out was 20-year-old Alex Rondeau who likely won’t be back until after Christmas.

The Bruins opened the scoring in the hockey game, late in the first period as Tanner Manz got by a Mustang defencemen on a powerplay and tucked the puck five-hole on Tanner Martin.

No other scoring took place until five minutes into the third period as Tyler Savage grabbed a loose puck off a Mustang turnover and made no mistake on the breakaway to make it 2-0 Bruins. Dylan Ashe responded for the Mustangs with a seeing eye shot made it’s way past Keenan Rancier for Ashe’s first Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League goal. The 2-1 score only lasted about three minutes as Griffin Asham-Moroz finished off a nice passing play on a powerplay to make it 3-1.

Melfort had their chances throughout the contest, but Rancier stopped 32 of 33 shots for the Bruins. Logan said there was some good things offensively.

“I think we had a lot of good looks at the net, we had a lot that he didn’t see that just went wide of the net,” Logan said. “Not to make excuses, I don’t think we had much puck luck.”

Logan added they’ll get back to work this week as the Mustangs prepare for a home and home set with the Nipawin Hawks before heading into the Christmas break.
