Pet licenses expiring at end of year, City of Melfort encouraging renewals

As the 2019 calendar year comes to a close, pet licenses will need to be renewed in the City of Melfort.

As of Jan. 1, 2020, residents will need to get their tags for the year. Director of Development, Planning, and Community Relations Brent Lutz said it’s important for people to get their pet licenses.

“And it’s great to have a license for your pet,” he said. “Not only does it mean you’re complying with the bylaw, but if your pet should ever go missing and our Animal Control Officer is to find it, then we do know how to find the owner and return it to it’s home.”

With recent changes to the City of Melfort’s animal services, the Harry and Eve Vickar shelter is now the one who has taken over the pound for the area. If a pet is caught, Lutz said those with licenses will be contacted and get their pet back easily. However, if someone does not have a license, the pet would be impounded and the owner would have to go to the shelter, pay a fee and then identify their pet.
