Sports Year in Review: Brandon inducted into Golf Saskatchewan Hall of Fame

Dec 21, 2019 | 12:45 PM

northeastNOW is taking a look back at the biggest and most interesting sports stories of 2019, as selected by our sports reporters Mat Barrett and Aaron Schulze:

Today, we look back at a local sports legend who was inducted into the Golf Saskatchewan Hall of Fame.

Gary Brandon was inducted as a builder back in August after many years in the golf world of Saskatchewan including 18 years as the pro at the Melfort Golf and Country Club.

Not only was Brandon heavily involved in golf, but he was also a very avid curler, and baseball player. Gary’s daughter Bobbi Brandon told northeastNOW back in August Gary would be very honoured to be part of the Hall of Fame.

“He was always a huge supporter just in sport in general I think,” she said. “And he always wanted to bring together people, whether it was a golf tournament or a curling bonspiel or whatever, so he seemed to really take to that.”

Ron Orr was President and an Executive during Brandon’s nearly two decades in Melfort. He said the club always ran smoothly when Gary was around.

“He took our club from being a little country club, to being well known across Saskatchewan,” Orr told northeastNOW. “And he was highly regarded by all the other pros that were in Saskatchewan.”

Another mark Gary left was the creation of a unique tournament in Melfort called the ‘Left-Right’. It’s now called the ‘Gary Brandon Left-Right tournament’ and is somewhat of a kick off to the golf season in Melfort.
