No More Plastic Bags

Cindy’s Independent Grocer set to eliminate plastic bags by June

Jan 7, 2020 | 6:10 PM

We’ve seen restaurants start providing paper straws instead of plastic straws, and now some grocery stores are going as far as completely phasing out plastic bags. One store in Melfort is set to do that by June of 2020.

Cindy Quinton, Owner of Cindy’s Independent Grocer said she brought the idea to her team in the middle of 2019, and the team decided with the momentum pushing to “cleaning up the world,” phasing out plastic bags was a good decision.

“It’s something the we wanted and are all passionate about,” she said. “And we definitely all agreed as a team that we wanted to push for this for 2020.”

According to Quinton, to start phasing out the plastic bags, staff will encourage shoppers to buy reusable bags and baskets. She said they’ll have some promos and features involving PC points with the bags and baskets.

For those who come to the till without something to carry their groceries out in, Quinton said they will help those customers out by giving them something to carry their groceries out in. She said by doing so, she hopes those customers then bring their own reusable bags or baskets for next time.

Quinton said eliminating plastic bags is the start of something more in the Melfort area.

“Someone’s got to start it,” she said. “And I hope that we are the leaders of this in Melfort, and that everybody else follows the trend.”

Currently, Independent charges five cents for a plastic bag at the till.
