Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age

Screenagers documentary being shown across northeast

Jan 13, 2020 | 2:00 PM

Screens are all around us, and one documentary hopes to highlight the changes we can make to reduce screentime to improve family relationships and fitness.

Screenagers: Growing is being shown around the northeast over the next few days starting on Monday, Jan. 13. The documentary explores the impact of screens on kids and families and offers new solutions. The screenings are offered through a partnership between Saskatchewan in Motion and the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

“It was created when the producer noticed that her own family was having some issues with screens, as many of us are,” Kim Herperger with Saskatchewan in Motion said.

Herperger said parents report screens are the biggest barrier in helping get kids active.

“We know that the average Canadian kid spends about seven hours a day in front of a screen,” she said. “A lot of us adults spend a good deal of our time doing that as well.”

The screenings are free for anyone to attend. After the documentary plays, there will be a group conversation for those attending to share their experiences and discuss the film.

Tonight the documentary will be shown at the Carrot River High School and Kelvington High School.

The schedule for the remainder of the week is as follows:

  • Tuesday, Jan. 14: Nipawin Evergreen Centre and Porcupine Plain Composite High School
  • Wednesday, Jan. 15: Melfort Public Library and Falkon Theatre (Tisdale)
  • Thursday, Jan. 16: Modeon Theatre (Hudson Bay)

All the showings begin at 7 p.m. There will be more showings available in February.
