Snow removal underway in Melfort

Following a significant snowfall over the weekend, crews from the City of Melfort are working to make the streets look like streets again.

Director of Development, Planning, and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW crews maintain 12 kilometres worth of streets, and another 20 kilometres of alleyways.

He said the city dispatches crews as soon as the snow subsides.

The first clearing priority is highways, collector streets, and emergency routes. That includes the city’s airport, Miller Field, which is cleared for air ambulance service.

The second priority is the central business district and school access routes, followed by the remainder of the commercial district.

“Priority four is excessive snow on your residential street,” Lutz said. “Our goal is to get there within seven days if you’ve got excessive snow there. However, if we have successive snowfall we may have to go back to the top of the priority [list] and start again.”

The final priority is the city’s back alleys.

Lutz also reminded residents the city bylaw prohibits residents from pushing snow from their property onto city streets, as it can become a hazard to passing vehicles.

There is also a 48-hour parking restriction on city streets, and anyone parking on the street must move vehicles throughout the winter.

“If you do hear the crews working on your street and you happen to be home, a good idea is to get your vehicle moved so that you can get it cleared well in front of your home,” Lutz said.

The city has a similar priority list for sanding and salting streets. The first priority is collector streets and school zones, followed by the business district, and then the remainder of the streets.
