Christmas Castle raises over $6,000 for NCHCF and Historic Post Office

The fruitcakes of Christmas season labour came to fruition to assist the North Central Health Care Foundation (NCHCF) and the Historic Post Office.

Melfort’s Christmas Castle – a fundraiser put on by local surgeon Dr. Adeyemi Laosebikan and his wife Foluke – brought in $5,675.50 for the NCHCF and $1,000 for the Historic Post Office. Dr. Laosebikan said it was the second light display tour fundraiser he and Foluke put on in the Historic Post Office and it raised nearly the same amount as they did in 2018.

“There’s always a need at the hospital for medical equipment to improve healthcare and delivery [Melfort Hospital],” he said. “That’s one of the reasons we support the NCHCF. I know the city is also working hard to raise funds to improve the Historic Post Office, so we decided to also donate some money towards the renovation project there.”

For the NCHCF, it’s the second year the non-profit organization that aims to enhance healthcare in Melfort and area received funding from the Christmas Castle.

“We never know what to expect,” NCHCF Chair Peggy George said. “It’s wonderful to see the community support these events. A lot of work goes into putting it on – the set-up, takedown, storage, behind the scenes, organizing the entertainment, and volunteers. It involves a lot of people. We do nothing as a foundation; we stand here and receive the cheque.

“This is going into general funds; future equipment needs. [Dr. Laosebikan] did say there were some cheques in here that are specified to different areas. Any time somebody specifies, that’s exactly where it goes.”

Dr. Laosebikan said the plan is to hold a third Christmas Castle in December 2020. He said they’re waiting on confirmation to book the Historic Post Office and recruit volunteers closer to the event.
