Mustangs snap four game skid with bounce-back win over Broncos

Jan 19, 2020 | 3:24 AM

The Melfort Mustangs got their first win in over two weeks on Saturday as they defeated the Humboldt Broncos 5-2, and left Elgar Petersen Arena snapping a four game skid.

Mustangs Assistant Coach Trevor Logan said it was one of the teams best performances in a while.

“The emotion was there tonight, the guys were jumping, they were relentless tonight,” he said. “And that’s what we’ve been really trying to get out of them and even if it’s not going our way and it doesn’t go our way on the scoreboard, we still want to be relentless, so that was good to see.”

Christian Albertson opened the scoring for the Mustangs just 1:44 into the game, giving them the first lead of the game, just as they did on Friday, a game they lost 5-4 in a shootout. Spencer McHardy got the Broncos back to even with less than three minutes to play in the first.

Then the Mustangs jumped on the Broncos in the second and put the knife to the throat of their opponents as Kenzie Arnold, Zach Anderson, and Alex Rondeau all scored before 10 minutes had expired in the seconds to give Melfort the 4-1 lead. Logan said the team deserved this one.

“It was nice to see everything kind of come together and get rewarded for it,” Logan said. “But at the same time, the boys have put their heads down these last two weeks, they worked hard in practice, and if you just battle through these tough stretches and go to work, these things usually work themselves out.”

Max Gudnason scored late in the second period to make it 4-2, but that’s as close as Humboldt would get. Melfort locked things down in the third period, only allowing six of their 35 total shots in that final frame. Arnold fired one into the empty net for the dagger putting the Mustangs up 5-2 for good.

“To have the boys pull it out tonight, and play a full sixty of hockey,” Logan said. “It’s huge.”

Melfort improves to 23-14-3-2 on the year, and have tied the La Ronge Ice Wolves for fourth in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
