MUCC Comets basketball team excited to be a part of pink game in Prince Albert

The Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) Comets Senior Girls basketball team is heading to Prince Albert for a game on Thursday.

The Comets will take part in the Carlton Crushes Cancer exhibition game at Carlton High as they raise funds for the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert.

“Our girls are so excited,” Comets Head Coach Kelly Linnell said. “We’ve been doing some fundraising here in our community, in our school. I believe we are taking $1,200 up to contribute to Carlton’s fundraiser.”

Linnell said some of their fundraising this year included taking in bottles, as well as a few raffles. They’ll also be holding a pancake breakfast next week during finals.

The pink game has been going on around the province for a few years, allowing senior girls basketball teams to play in front of a big crowd and raise funds for their community. Last year, St. Mary’s in Prince Albert hosted Carlton for the event.

“Next year, we are doing it with Meadow Lake, so we are going to host the pink game,” Linnell told northeastNOW. “We will be raising money for a cancer machine here at our own local hospital.”

St. Mary’s purchased pink jerseys for Carlton to wear in this year’s game, meaning next year, Carlton will buy pink uniforms for MUCC’s game.

The event begins at 7 p.m. in Prince Albert on Thursday with speeches and pre-game ceremonies. There will also be silent auction items to bid on at the event, as well as a raffle for the “best seats in the house.”
