Penalties sink Mustangs in loss to North Stars
The Melfort Mustangs had the Battlefords North Stars in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action on Friday, until they didn’t.
After Kyle Bosch opened the scoring for Melfort 1:30 into the second period, Melfort seemed to have all the momentum. Even in the first period, before any goals, the visiting Mustangs had a 7-0 shot lead at one point. Matthias Urbanski scored a powerplay goal with five minutes to play in the second to tie the game, but it seemed the Mustangs still had control.
They showed it in the beginning of the second as they scored again, this time 1:17 in as Zach Anderson scored his second goal in as many games. However, shortly after is when the game took a turn. Dylan Ashe took a double minor high-sticking penalty and put the Mustangs shorthanded. The North Stars scored just 20 seconds apart on the powerplays to quickly turn the game on it’s head and make it 3-2 thanks to Noah Form and Urbanski.
Battlefords would then pull away in the final 10 minutes as Quintin Loon-Stewardson scored, then Urbanski completing his hat-trick. Then it was Kaden Boser on a late powerplay to make it 6-2.
