Mustangs can’t complete comeback in Kindersley, fall to Klippers

Jan 26, 2020 | 5:26 AM

The Melfort Mustangs return home from a two game southern road swing with just a single point after falling to the Kindersley Klippers 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday.

The loss came one day after a 6-2 loss at the hands of the Battlefords North Stars.

In the first period each team had a couple of scoring chances, but neither team really took charge. The shot clock showed that as it was 9-9 after one.

In the second, the Klippers jumped out to a quick start. Liam Fraser scored his 24th of the year just over a minute into the period, while Jaxon Georget made it 2-0 a minute and a half later. However, the Mustangs came back hard at the 7:48 mark of the period, Alex Rondeau drove to the net and fired a sharp angle shot where the rebound was wacked in by Marco Lopez to bring the visiting Mustangs back within one. The remaining half of the second was back and forth with both teams getting some chances, but neither putting another one on the scoreboard.

The third period featured the Mustangs pressing to get back into the game, but Kindersley didn’t make it easy. Melfort was able to tie it up just over 11 minutes into the period on a powerplay. It was a perfect storm as former Kindersley Klipper Austin Nault in his first game against the club scored his first goal as a Mustang. Melfort had a few chances to score late but were unable to capitalize, meaning overtime was upcoming.

The Mustangs took a penalty midway through overtime, but were able to kill it off, and neither team were able to finish it off in the 3-on-3 extra frame.

Nault was the first Mustang to shoot in the shootout, and he was able to score. That was followed by Ethan Mack scoring for Kindersley. Adam Nobes missed for Melfort, followed by Fraser scoring for the Klippers. Tian Rask needed to score to keep his team alive, which he was unable to do, dropping the Mustangs to 23-15-3-3, but they do take sole possession of third place with the single point.

The Mustangs get back on the ice on Tuesday as they host Weyburn.
