Nipawin Radio Decision

CRTC approves application for Nipawin radio station

Jan 30, 2020 | 1:00 PM

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has awarded CJNE FM Radio Inc. a new low-power commercial FM country music radio station.

The application was approved by the CRTC Jan. 30. CJNE FM Radio Inc. currently has a station on 94.7 FM.

The CJNE FM Radio Inc. application also promised to devote one hour and 46 minutes of spoken word programming to news, with 95 per cent of newscasts devoted to local and regional news.

The commission received an intervention in opposition to the application from the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Limited Partnership, which owns northeastNOW.

However, the commission disagreed with Pattison that Nipawin cannot support an additional station.

The new low-power station will be 50 watts, with a signal that won’t reach beyond Nipawin. The regulator is not allowing overlap with the Pattison stations, including the country music station CJVR.

CJVR and CKJH station Manager Linda Rheaume told northeastNOW the areas currently reached with CJVR will continue to reach exclusively.
