Melfort outdoor ice surfaces remain open during warm snap

Even with the warm weather approaching the northeast region, some outdoor activities in Melfort will still remain in use.

According to Facilities Manager Leonard Whitney, all of the city outdoor rinks, as well as the crokicurl sheet on Main Street will remain open.

“We’ve put a lot of time and effort into our outdoor rinks,” Whitney said. “And we’ve got a good thick layer of ice on all of our rinks.”

He said the rink that might get a bit soft is the one on the south side by Burke playground. But the skating surfaces and crokicurl will be available for residents to use and enjoy. Temperatures could reach 7 Celsius by Saturday.

Whitney said it can get slushy on the rinks during this time, meaning the area could be a bit more slippery than normal.

“We want to make sure that everybody is safe, and nobody slips and falls,” he said. “So yeah, a little extra caution should be warranted.”

With slush very possible on the local ice surfaces, Whitney said once this warm snap passes, they may need to do a bit more tending to those areas.

“If we do get slush, we’ll try and scrape the slush down,” Whitney told northeastNOW. “And then get some more floods up on top to get it back smooth and in great shape.”

Meanwhile, the Dale Frier Memorial Rink in Melfort is run by the local Kinsmen group. They say their rink by Melfort & Unit Comprehensive Collegiate will be open during this warm stretch, but it won’t get flooded until it gets a bit colder.
