Local football experts weigh in on Super Bowl

Feb 1, 2020 | 12:50 PM

Super Bowl 54 is upon us.

On Sunday the Kansas City Chiefs will be facing off against the San Francisco 49ers in Miami for the National Football League’s (NFL) ultimate prize, the Vince Lombardi trophy.

Who will come out on top? Will the high-powered Chiefs offence led by Patrick Mahomes be too much for the 49ers defence? Or will Jimmy Garoppolo lead the Californians to the sport’s promised land?

paNOW asked local football aficionados who will win the big game on Sunday.

Carlton Crusaders Head Coach Lindsay Strachan said the Chiefs will come out tops.

“I think their offence is too explosive,” he said. “I think they’re going to force San Francisco to throw the ball and I don’t know that Jimmy G’s good enough to beat Patrick Mahomes in a shootout.” He predicts Garoppolo will throw some costly interceptions.

The 49ers defence was one of the best in the NFL’s regular season only allowing 281 total yards per game, that’s second best in the NFL, according to NFL.com. They are also rated number one in the postseason allowing the least total yards per game.

Strachan said the 49ers defence may slow the Chiefs offence down, but they won’t be able to do it all game.

“If you look at Kansas City, I think it’s going to ring true. I think they’ll start slow until they figure out San Francisco’s game plan and then they just score so quick and so prolific,” Strachan said. “Even if they’re down early I think they’re going to come back and win.” He also predicted Patrick Mahomes will win the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award.

President of Prince Albert Minor Football, Bob Coffin, said although his heart said Kansas City will win it, he thinks the 49ers will come out victorious.

“That ball control offence of the 49ers plus their defence I think is going to end up coming out on top,” Coffin said.

He added the 49ers defence has good speed and they’re going to need that against speedy Chiefs receivers.

“The real key is going to be whether those four defensive lineman from San Francisco can get pressure on to Mahomes because he’s quite capable of running around back there until somebody gets open,” Coffin said.

He added it will be nice to see a Canadian playing in the game. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif from Montreal is an offensive lineman for the Chiefs.

“Like to cheer for the Canadian guys,” he added.

Coffin predicts a high scoring game with the 49ers winning 44-34. He also said if the Chiefs win Patrick Mahomes will claim the MVP.

“It’ll be interesting because we’ve got all the little side stories involved in it,” Coffin said.

Prince Albert Minor Football Coach Taras Kachkowski said the Chiefs will win.

“When it comes to the NFL, my team allegiances kind of flip around to whoever hasn’t won it in the longest amount of time and since the Chiefs haven’t won it since 1970 that’s who I’m rooting for,” he said.

He said Mahomes will be the key factor for a Chiefs victory on Sunday.

“He’s lighting up the league, he’s a really talented young man that if things hold up in his career I think he legitimately has a chance to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the greats of the game,” he said. “Of course, winning on Sunday will certainly be a big step in being mentioned.”

He added he hopes to see a close and exciting game.

“With San Francisco’s defence being as strong as it is it should be a tight exciting game like you would hope a championship final should be.”

Unlike Strachan and Coffin, Kachkowski predicts a lopsided Chiefs victory 35 to 10 but added Mahomes will win MVP.

The Super Bowl will begin at 5:30 p.m. CST on Sunday.
